2009 Draft Conference Schedule
We are pleased to share, for the first time ever, a full year's conference schedule as soon as we possibly can (We met last week to agree on the date ranges, and told our travel planner today).
Please note that the three day date ranges are the Tues-Wed-Thurs of that week. For each week, then, that gives us two options: either a Tues-Wed conference or a Wed-Thurs conference. (We don't like the idea of folks having to travel away from their families on the weekends.) We've listed two weeks for each city, so that gives us 4 possible 2-day sets for each city, which is usually sufficient.
London: January 20-22 or 27-29
Dallas: March 17-19 or 24-26
Washington DC: May 12-14 or 19-21
Los Angeles: July 21-23 or 28-30
Chicago: September 15-17 or 22-24
Newark: November 10-12 or 17-19
These dates are only 90% certain. It's possible we've picked a certain city at a certain time (imagine if we had picked Denver for this week). We have to wait to hear back from our travel planner about hotels that can accommodate us on those dates. We try to keep room rates down for attendees, and our costs down too - sometimes that's a factor.
We are trying to get to new places while balancing what we know of member densities and stated demand. Yes, stated demand matters to some degree.
If we are not coming to your area, please consider asking us to come directly to you. We don't talk about our client work a lot, but we do a lot of it nonetheless. If you have around 15 folks, it's almost cheaper for us to come to you, and on-site client conferences are tailored to your culture and the group we're working with. Seriously - it only takes about 15 folks (and we do limit attendance to 25).
The Chicago and Newark conferences will be in the same hotels as this year. They did well. We will not return to the Dulles Airport Marriott for the Wash DC effort.
We really blew it last year promising to come to Sydney and not following through. We're still working on a solution for Australia.
There's risk in this process. We know some of you might could have been enticed to come to earlier conferences if we had delayed announcing later cities. But this is just the better way. We hope you'll agree by signing up as soon as you can.
We hope to see you at a conference in '09!

Gents, pls let us know when will we be able to register for the conferences mentioned here - I am interested in the London option and I can imagine the seats will go fast. Thx a bunch. Marek

This is great! You will be well received in LA...we look forward to having you here! Having a schedule helps a great deal - we're preparing budgets now and I've suggested your conference to several people so now I can give them a better idea of the travel involved.

Thanks.

Further to Ced's comment, I have assumed that the January 2009 London Effective Manager Conference will be similar to the Amsterdam January 2008 Conference. On that basis I plan to fund at least one of my DR's. I really wish that there could also be a 2-day Effective Communications Conference in London which would attract Amsterdam Conference Alumni. If this is not logistically possible, how about a 1-day "top-up" for those who have been at a European Effective Manager Conference?

For anyone wishing to register to a London conference, please shoot me an email at maggie@manager-tools.com such that I can keep you name on our list. Once the registration opens up (and it will as soon as we have the details on exact site and hotel), I will shoot you an email to remind you to officially register. You are right, we have had so many requests for London, that I do think it will fill quickly. If you share your intent, you your name will be placed on my list.

David-
I agree, it would be great to have this special conference for the attendees of the first one. I'll try to gather the information. Mark and Mike say 15 people is a good number to get them. Would it be possible?

Folks-
London as listed above IS the Effective Manager Conference.
I will talk to Mike about doing something in addition, as in the Effective Communications Conference.
We have some clients considering having us visit them on site while we are in Europe, so those have to be considered in our scheduling.
Additionally, the 15 person conference for on site is not necessarily a good planning number for a multi-company manager conference in Europe. The reason we get to 15 has to do with our travel costs being covered, not having to have other facilitators attend, and the company not having to pay for all of their travel, and much less lost work opportunity costs. We wouldn't think of it as comparing apples to apples.
That said, it's not out of the question...it's just not as simple a math as we all might like. Our time is getting to the point that the issue is opportunity cost. A full week's consulting could be as high as $50,000, and a two day conference scotches that.
And. again, we're sure open to the idea, particularly as a nod to Amsterdam attendees.
Send mail to Maggie, and let's see what we can make work.

I sent a mail to Maggie and I started a "conversation" on LinkedIn about this. It is located in the "Manager-Tools Amsterdam Conference Alumni" Group.

What would be the minimum number of people to get around a price of 1500 Euros per head?

Yes, the scheduled ones as of now are only Management conferences. It's HIGHLY likely we'll have a communications conference in '09, though.

Mark,
Thank you for the response back. I will budget for two and when the dates become available for the communications conference I will attend.
I am new to MT and just started my one on ones. They are working just like you stated they would.
The podcasts have changed my entire outlook on management.
Thank you,

Have any of the dates been finalized? My company is looking to send me to a conference but we need to pay before the year is out.
Are there going to be the Effective Communications Conferences offered immediately after the Management Conference or will that be completely separate dates?
I would like to attend the London conference since both conferences are offered, but the airfare is just too much. Thank you for all you do!

No, no dates finalized but London. Dallas VERY soon.
We haven't decided to do ECC's right after yet.
Hope to see you next year.

Any updates on the conference schedule?
Especially for Chicago? I'd like to start lobbying to attend, but I need a firm date and cost to even get started.
Thanks.
Chicago...
...will either be the week of the 10th or the 17th. Working on hotel contracts now. Hope to see you there.
