Bonus #2 - How to Answer the Leadership Style Question
April 25th, 2008From our weekly shows, this cast describes how to answer the interviewing question, “Describe Your Leadership Style.”
This is perhaps the third most important interviewing question, after, “Tell me about yourself,” and behavioral questions. It can be a tough one if you haven’t done some thinking about how you lead and motivate others, and why others perform well when you are leading them.
In this cast, we walk through how to prepare to answer, and how to deliver an impressive answer. Finally, at the end of the show, we share a crucial test that your answer must pass. While you already know the answer to the test, it still catches most people off guard.

I’m curious, why are you re-posting this cast from Sept-07?

smallnetd,
I was asked if we could make this cast, along with the Premium Content for the show, available to those who purchased the Interviewing Series. Great idea, so I did!

Another idea for the Interview Series …
How to make the Transition
Leaving your position is covered in the How to Resign podcast but more importantly……
First things to do in your new position (e.g. moving from lower/middle management to senior management or senior management to exec) - when you move up a few steps of the corporate ladder, say by moving to a slightly smaller company for that dream opportunity then it can be a big jump.
Wouldn’t mind this being a registered cast and just adding to the interview series feed
Also, Mark/Mike prerhaps you could add the following to the feed:
1. How to handle Headhunters
2. How to Resign
3. How to handle PreEmployment Testing
4. Resume Review
5. Horstman’s Wager
Thanks again for creating such a wonderful toolset.

The value in these series is un-believable.
I followed the flow of the conversation, presenting yourself, tell about your accomplishments, ask good questions and close. I had 3 interviews: The first I didn’t do bad, but I cheated on audio and video preparations and that made me concentrate too much and loose my energy and enthusiasm. Luckily I got through to the second interview by a good close and sending a personal (though via email) note.
My second interview(not with the same company) was horrible. I messed up by not sticking to the plan. The manager did not ask for accomplishments and I did not take the lead to tell him about them, so we ended up talking about nothing. The company did not turn out to be right for me either, but the interview taught me some valuable lessons. As expected I got turned down, I called back and asked why and even what he liked and did not like. That 5 minute phone call was more valuable than the 60 minute conversation we had earlier.
Got back up, learned from my mistakes, tweaked my presentation and stepped up to the plate in the second conversation with the first(and my personal number one) company. Somehow the first two were practice and this was when all things came together. I was relaxed enough with the techniques to show my energy and to pick up on more subtleties to select my accomplishments to those that matched the interviewing managers’ background. All the while I was talking through my accomplishments with great enthusiasm and a sparkle in my eyes and a smile on my face, he was just looking at me with a big smile nodding his head with agreement. It was like we were buddies and I was telling about some great adventure we were in together a long time ago.
When I was done after 20 minutes(I combined ‘tell me about yourself’ and my top 3 three major accomplishments), I asked if he had any questions. He asked: “How much do you want to be paid and when can you start?” Seriously!
After we walked out his office he told me this was the first conversations in months which actually gave him energy, instead of him trying to energize someone else.
I’m convinced the techniques in these series got me this dream job with a paycheck I’m still not convinced I deserve. Mark and Mike, with your work you gave me a lot of tools that allowed me to mature professionally, not just with this interviewing series, but with all your podcasts. With my first new paycheck I will become a premium content member and support the show. Thanks so much!
