Why We Do This, Part 2

March 16th, 2008

Several of you have written recently, expressing your appreciation for the work we do on your behalf. Some of what was shared is too good to keep to ourselves.

I am a Manager in a [European] IT company and for 6 months I slogged with my 8 member team unknown and unrecognized in a small corner of the office.

Then last month our clients started reviewing all the teams that were servicing their account and were quite disappointed with the people management systems in place. Or rather the lack of them.

Until they reviewed our team.

They saw strange terms bandies about, like O3, Coaching, employee engagement surveys, constant feedback systems.

Guess what?

My VP promoted me to ‘Process Excellence Manager’ to ensure ALL teams followed the lead of the ‘Center of Excellence’ that my team is now recognized as.

All it is all because of 2 people in a distant country. You make a difference and maybe in the end that is all that matters.

A fan

Congratulations Mr. a Fan. It’s nice to be reminded that being a good manager (ie: doing lots of “behind the scenes” thankless work) can pay off.

I think you do a great job. I just did your survey and kudos and extra kudos for making it “free”. I listened to 2 casts and instantly got my pd membership. I support your efforts, I’ve benefited from your advice and my team looks to me for sound leadership. With your advice, I’ve been able to answer quickly, decisively and practically - I’ll be grooming a new manager soon and this series will become manditory listening!

I was in HR today. 2 HR folk were discussing what they were to write to an employee who was displaying unacceptable behaviour. One of them suggested to the other they should say his attitude was unacceptable. No, said the other, we don’t use attitude. And then they struggled with what word to use. In the end they turned to me - IT Support assistant manager, patently waiting to pass over a DVD Rom.

You’re ahead of me. It was of course blindingly obvious to anyone who has even heard one of your casts.

“Behaviour”, I replied. “His attitude is a subjective judgement by you. You need to explain that when he does that then this happens and what can he do differently”. The new HR chap looked stunned by such a simple truth. The more experienced HR wallah agreed, and behaviour it was.

So much more to do, boys. So many more to reach.

I am finally writing to you with much gratitude. I have been a fan of yours since Sept ‘06 when my boss said he ran across your site. (I am his HR guy) Together we started listening and comparing notes. We decided to try one-on-ones together. What happened was amazing. Since then we have bought mp3 players for the entire staff. I develop a schedule of shows to listen to and we discuss them in our Monday staff meetings. The web site is spreading throughout our organization and our team is operating on high octane. We often quote you guys and laugh. I ask my boss “Can I give you some feedback?” and it is a light-hearted, and well accepted opener into what would have been a very difficult discussion in the past. Your tools are priceless. You tear down all the mush of the theories we learn in school, read about in our HR Exec magazines, and go straight for the things that will enhance the performance of our team. I am a premium member and plan to continue as long as you two keep talking. I see the results daily. Being retired Navy, I was surprized so much wisdom comes out of two Army guys (JK). Keep up the great work. BZ! Thank you.

    chief,

Thanks for the kind remarks (ok, other than that Army crack ;-)

Mark and I are always thrilled when we get notes like yours … it reminds us that we are indeed living our dream.

Thanks for putting the ideas in action - that’s always the hard part. Well done!

    Best Regards,
    Mike

P.S. And we’ll keep the fact that a Navy guy is taking advice from some Army guys just between us … and a few thousand other folks that happen to frequent the site. :-)
