For some reason, the Extra Content: Annual Layoff Immunization Shownotes (PDF) and Annual Layoff Immunization Slides (PDF) downloaded on iTunes into a different folder this time.
All of the other Premium files downloaded to
D:\Miguel\iTunes\iTunes Music\Podcasts\Manager Tools Premium Content Feed
but this one did it to
    D:\Miguel\iTunes\iTunes Music\Unknown Artist\Manager Tools Premium Content Feed
    The “unknown artist” puzzles me.
¿anything I should do to get them all in the same windows exporer folder?

Mark and Mike, thanks once again for a podcast that is “obvious in hindsight”.

During this podcast, Mark strongly recommended John Lucht’s book, “Rites of Passage at $100,000+”. The title implies that the book is somewhat US-centric.

Does anyone know how well this book applies to non-US situations? Are there any signficant differences in approach between switching jobs in the US and in other parts of the world (the UK for example)?

    heam711220,

You’re right … I’m looking into it now, although I’m not certain whether something changed on our end or if this is a result of the latest iTunes update. If you don’t mind, what version of iTunes are you using?

    thanks,
    Mike

  4. Blueman Says:

Ever since the “upgrade”, I have been unable to download a podcast through iTunes. This cast doesn’t even show up in iTunes as of Monday morning, 8:00 a.m. EST (it was posted Sunday night). I have 2 streams MT & MT Members Only - neither work…..

  5. bobo26 Says:

Hi Blueman, in Itunes Podcast, please try this sequence:
    1. Press and hold the “Shift” key
    2. Click on the triangle left to “Manager Tools” podcast entry - it will trigger iTunes to refresh the episodes
    3. Wait for a couple of seconds for refresh to complete
    4. You should see the new episodes now.

    Best to you all, Robert

    heam711220,

I think we have the issue resolved. Looks like some recent updates to iTunes changed the way they handled some elements of the RSS feed. Our feed has been updated appropriately (at least I think!) and the downloads appear to be placed in the correct location now.

If you delete (and move to the trash) the mis-placed premium documents, refresh the feed so ALL documents are shown (shift-click the disclosure triangle next to the feed title) and then select to download the files again, all should be correct.

Thanks again for pointing out the issue.

    regards,
    Mike

Thank goodness I own the company (firm). The laptop and cell phone the firm provide me, really are mine.

  8. Blueman Says:

is it just me….I still do not see The Annual Layoff Immunization Part 2 in iTunes. It is not showing up in my itunes download and I go to MT in itunes and do not see it either…….

I even tried the hold-shift trick and that didn’t work. Once again, since the “upgrade” I have not been able to download a cast (and I can’t even see this one)

  9. CalKen Says:

During your podcast you asked for input from people who purchased the “Rites of Passage” book.

I purchased the book around six months ago from Amazon (although the book was expensive I took the MT advice blindly based on your website recommendations) as I was in my “update resume” mode.

When I got the book I was not disappointed. There is so much information in there, and the way in which it goes step-by-step is very helpful. Although I have not done a lot of it (nor have I read the entire book I confess) I have already benefited from the books advice based on recent networking experiences which has already paid direct dividends in my career. These steps are also very proactive, and the author goes to great length to explain everything you need to do with how it will benefit you, something I found very useful.

On the negative side, I did find the information in the book a bit overwhelming. I found that when I was looking for specific information I had to spend some time looking for it (the layout was good overall but finding specific information was a little clumsy). This is a very minor fact, which reflects just how much information this book provides.

I do not think that I found an entire page where I did not say “wow, that is a great idea”. For those of you who want to be proactive in your career progression this is a must-have. I keep this book on my end table for filling my free time, and will keep it there for a long time.

I’d like to add something to the very helpful suggestions on this podcast:

    * Keep a copy of your Manager Tools podcasts and Premium Content on your home computer (or otherwise archived at home)

Same reasons: You could lose access to those things when you need them most!

Yeah, I suppose you could get a fresh copy from the web, but when you’re stressed out who wants to wait for the interview casts to download?

    Blueman,

I could not say definitively that it is “just you”, but I’m not aware of others with a similar problem. The podcast IS in the RSS feed, so I suspect the problem is on your end. Unfortunately, other than refreshing the feed (shift-click triangle), which you already tried, I don’t have anything else to suggest.

    Sorry!

    Mike

  12. hamptonsrob Says:

    Hi Mike and Mark,

First, I want to thank you both your podcasts are great. I always find at least one useful tip in each podcast.

Second, I have to give you some feedback regarding your Plaxo comments in this podcast. I have to disagree with your comments. I think what you’re illustrating is the problem of not being on Plaxo.

If you’re a professional you should be on Plaxo. No exceptions. There have been issues in the past about all those update requests or emails updating everyone if you change something. Plaxo is a great free service and also has some great paid services. If you sign-up and keep your information up-to-date then anybody else who’s on Plaxo and linked to you will always have the most up-to-date information.

Their Outlook toolbar is a great way to keep your contacts backed up off your work computer.

I would suggest you do a podcast on productivity enhancing tech solutions. Would be happy to discuss various useful tools.

    Rob

I’m not sure if I understand the advice about getting the Wall Street Journal print edition versus only the online edition. As long as I can get to it via my own private network connections, does it matter? Did I misinterpret?

  14. Mark Horstman Says:

That’s fine as long as you read it. But we have found lots of managers subscribed to all kinds of things electronically that don’t get read during a layoff. I suspect it’s the lack of a daily reminder…which is why we said electronic is fine if you have a reminder to read it set.
