Interviewing VIDEO

Thanks to the initial success of Premium Content, Mike and I have invested in MacBook Pros...and produced video for Manager Tools. We're very excited and want to say thanks to the Manager Tools community for allowing us to invest back into our delivery of high quality tools for your development.

Our first video is now in the RSS feed. You can either view it in iTunes, on your video/music player (QuickTime), or in windows media player (though it may not initially recognize the file type, click the "try" button).

This video is a brief 3 minute excerpt of Mark's Interviewing Presentation, covering Horstman's First Law of Interviewing.

Our intent is to provide much more video this year. Our thoughts include conference excerpts supporting the Management Trinity, the Interviewing Series, and certain casts that lend themselves to visual presentations. As a general rule, video will be Premium Content, due to cost and time of production, but there will be frequent exceptions.

And you'll see this one on YouTube at some point... ;-)

Thanks again for your support: Premium Content subscriptions funded this enhancement to your community.

I would love to. Just got myself a Mac Book. The video worked just fine. I'd like to see the size of the video increased.

Great, On my computer the video

Great,

On my computer the video didn't work from the site (don't know why),
but your post on youtube.com worked perfectly !

Hope to see more of you guys.
(I second for a video on handshakes)

Congrats on the Mac Book Pro purchases

Congrats on the Mac Book Pro purchases ... I got mine for the same reason you guys did. It is an awesome video production system.

I enjoyed the video. Keep them coming. - Steve

Regarding the Macs: Mike and I both

Regarding the Macs:

Mike and I both love gadgets and technology, but we bought the MACS specifically to allow us to deliver the video to you this week, and we wouldn't have had it not been for the response to Premium Content.

While on our way to the store, we talked about how we hoped to continue giving to the community, and receiving enough return to allow us to continue to invest.

It was only after the visit to pick up his Mac that he suggested I get one to replace my aging (and MUCH loved) Dell Latitude X300, which is a GREAT for traveling ultraportable whose next day service can no longer be renewed. I would never have gotten one save for that and his having one, and knowing I could ask him for help (though I used to be a sysadmin for a small Mac network 18 years ago).

We were back at my office (Mike was in Texas this week for an annual strategy meeting) by 9 pm, and he was up til 3 am working on the video, and finished putting it all together and putting it into the rss feed shortly before it went up.

My work was done years ago on this...Mike really learned a lot and was totally driven to continue our efforts of sharing with our community.

Glad it's being received so well!

Mark

I knew I liked my anonymity!

I knew I liked my anonymity! ;-)

Glad that the video made me seem more approachable...I've always thought I was a nice guy, and never dreamed that I would develop the curmudgeonly reputation the audiocasts have given me.

On the other hand, that snippet of the larger presentation was me being pretty nice. Maybe I am not so nice!

Regarding my size...won't someone who has met me please come to my rescue? I'm 6'3 and 230, and getting bigger is the WRONG way for me to go!

Regarding Javier's comment...I can't imagine we suggested EVER presenting with small gestures, unless we were talking about the VERY first moments. Would love to clear this up, but great presenters ALWAYS use LOTS of LARGE movements....

Finally, glad the comment about my moving around came with a caveat. The projector essentially precluded me from standing in the well, and the auditorium is quite "fanned", requiring much movement in order to connect with the SEVERAL HUNDRED in attendance. A persuasive speaker assesses the audience - students late in the day with plenty of other places to be - and makes a decision about how much energy he or she has to give to ensure the most persuasive result.

Maybe we'll get an actor for future videos! :-) Naah.

Mark

Excellent video. I look forward to the things to come. I agree with Javier. Mark was nicely animated with hand gestures, etc, but the pacing made me want to go out and buy some Dramamine. :-) I'm sure it's because we're seeing the video and not there in person.

he he - good to get the video - you

he he - good to get the video - you guys obviously had to do _something_ with your new toys I can see that! :-)

That's the first time I've seen a close-up of you Mark - though I have no way of proving it, nor is it of any real consequence, but you look about 80% of what I had imagined you look like! Is there a cast coming on sounding like you look? ;-)

Again, great to see the video, looking forward to more in the P content!

Great job! The video podcasts will be a fantastic addition to ManagerTools. When I see the success you two are having it is inspiring. Of course I don't see the years of hard work that you have put in. Congratulations!

Dears Mike and Mark: The video is

Dears Mike and Mark:

The video is just a GREAT idea and I did enjoy it tremendously. One question came to my mind while watching it: I think I remember from your podcast on how to present that movement should be subtle to keep the audience focused on the presentation, but Mark is quite active during the presentation. Am I remembering things wrong from that podcast?

Thanks a million

Javier

This is very good. What a great year

This is very good. What a great year for both of you. First the conferences followed by premium content and now videos. A classic demonstration of doing what you love and providing value and the success will come. Can't wait to see what is next. Many thanks for all you do.

Regards, Terry

Great video. I can't wait to see even more video content. You guys are going to force me to buy a video iPod!
I am glad to hear the Premium Content is such a success. I have certainly gotten some great value from it in just the first 10 days!

Mike & Mark Glad you've got these

Mike & Mark

Glad you've got these going now. I'm really looking forward to the video pod-cast on shaking hands. My hand shake is good, better thanks to you, but I'm expecting it to be very entertaining cast. Can we vote for who has to demonstrate the bad handshakes?

Also, why not flip things around once or twice and let Mike provide the content while Mark asks the obvious questions?

Thanks for all your work

p.s. Congrats on the Mac purchase. An example of another wise decision.

Perfect!!! The video looks great!!!

Perfect!!! The video looks great!!! Way to go guys;-)

Cédric, they bought MacBook Pros,

Cédric,

they bought MacBook Pros, which are notebooks. iMacs are very fine, although I am not sure about the newly released version with the glossy screen. Whatever you buy, a Mac is a good decision :-)

Now this could be interesting. These notebooks have a good built-in camera. When they explain gestures, facial expressions body language or such, they could just turn on video recording real quick and put up a short video demonstrating this.

Good times!

Bye,
Martin

I am considering buying a Mac. I did not think about a MacPro, but an Imac. Am I wrong ? I'll certainly find an answer by posting a topic on the forum.

And ... That's great news to know that we will have you guys on video.

Cédric.

Count me in as another Macbook Pro

Count me in as another Macbook Pro user. Had mine for just over ayear now, and I'm still loving it.

Am I right in thinking that the video snippet is from the Kellog videos that you did some time ago? I was fortunate enough to download them when they were still available on the web.

I found watching those videos really changed my perception of you Mark...maybe because you remind me a lot of my uncle. You come across as more approachable in the video than you do in the podcasts. It really gave me a different perspective on where you are coming from.

Regards,

Thomas

Congratz on the Mac Book Pro purchase -

Congratz on the Mac Book Pro purchase - great news! If you ever have questions about using the Mac OS, Video Editing, Audio Editing, etc., please let me know! It looks like the new iMovie '08 could be of great help for your work (Steve jobs just introduced it on Tuesday).
I'm a long time professional Mac-User, editing huge projects (both video and audio) on a daily basis, mainly because work as a music producer.

BTW, this is a great video - thank you so much!

SadlyI cannot install the Quicktime

SadlyI cannot install the Quicktime player on the thin client machine I am using, so now every time the M_T home page loads I get a pop-up window asking me to goto the the Apple download page and install it. I can see it getting a little annoying.

That said congrats on moving to video. Video prodcution and editing is a little sideline and a passion of mine (I have some motion graphics experience if you need some help there). Now please read my comments about Mac's in the Horstmans Laws blog comments ;)
