Horstman's Laws
For those of you, for whatever reason, who didn't get the latest email (or, even worse, got it, but didn't read it!), we'll repeat the message here ...
As you know, we've made reference to many of Horstman's Laws during the podcasts, but have never provided them in a single place. Today, we change that! As a way of saying thanks to all of our listeners for their support over these past 2 years, we'd like to provide you the gift of Horstman's Laws.
We've provided you the Laws in a very nice, formatted PDF. These are images of the beautiful boxed set we provided to attendees of the Manager Tools Effective Manager Conference. Although perhaps not quite as nice as a boxed set on top-of-the-line card stock, they will still look beautiful printed and on your wall.
And, unlike our podcasts and the other material we've provided on the website, please feel free to distriute the PDF of Horstman's Laws with as many folks as you would like.
You can download Horstman's Laws here.
Again, thank you for your support over the past 2 years. We feel incredibly blessed ... and we have you to thank for that.
As always, it's our pleasure to serve!
Mark and Mike

Mark,
isn't it funny - if everyone applied law #7 properly, arguments, dissensions and ensueing fights would become extinct- we would have ourselves under control, finally. Our reactions would no longer overtake our reason (the thinking-doing gap).
"Choose not to get angry" - wow. A great guideline and perfectly delineated.
IMHO, #7 should be incorporated into any and every kind of counsel. Right at the beginning. Then start discussing.

Okay I understand better now. And ... I agree.
I sometimes realize that being too hard on deadline or on "perfect execution" can lead me to 3 things : micromanagement (no podcast about that ?), too many work hours and a pessimistic vision of things.

Criticism is NOT the breakfast of champions.
People who criticize are the breakfast of managers who know the difference between feedback and criticism. ;-)

Ced- Sorry that you feel that way,
Ced-
Sorry that you feel that way, but we do too sometimes. My point was just that there ARE times (though many managers and executives don't think this way there are some that do and they do well also) when relaxing a little is what works best. Humans are not machines, and sometimes take a moment or some time to react appropriately to your inputs as their manager.
If you've ever worked with a mouse on a computer that is slow, you've felt the FRUSTRATION of taking action and then realizing that what you were responding to was incomplete information, and you find yourself repeatedly overcorrecting.
Sometimes pausing works, and things work out. (When you were on vacation they did).

Mike and Mark,
Thanks for making this available, amazing, as usual.
Also, to everyone, funny story, my boss said to me today, while giving feedback, "criticism is the breakfast of champions." Also, the feedback itself contained no behaviors. I am so glad there is a podcast about making this "criticism" into something I can use. I love MT.

Thanks you for the guide. I have to admit it was a pleasant surprise to see that Horstman's laws really did exist. My original mental image of was an imaginary guide to everything to be cited as needed, ala The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Thanks for the nice PDF. I would like to print some of these out on nice paper as you suggested. Can you post another version that doesn't have the paragraph marks showing on each page? (There is a line under www.manager-tools.com and immediately underneath that - in blue - is a large paragraph mark.) I can cut them out in PhotoShop, but I thought that other people might want to print them as well. Thanks for the continued great content and the opportunity to get premium content.

Mark, Mike,
Thank you for this new gift.
Law 5 is difficult for me. I have a tendency of immediately reacting to a missed deadline because not reacting means I don't care about a project sliping away from plan ...
Can you be more explicit about this one ?
Many thanks,
Cédric.
