San Francisco Meet-up

February 25th, 2007

Mark and I will be in San Francisco the evening (8:00pm) of Tuesday March 6th [edited], 2007 (Mark is speaking at the Game Developer’s Conference in town). I remember a couple of folks asking about an SF meet-up. If anyone in the area would like to take the lead in finding an appropriate place (pizza), we’d love to participate!

Any takers?

Mike

I’ve been a Manager Tools devotee for about six months now and I’m ready to find out if my 10-step handshake is up to snuff. I’d love to meet up with you and any other Manager Tools fans.

Tommaso’s North Beach restaurant sounds great, and Mike might like it because of the traditional Italian menu. I haven’t been there, but it’s well reviewed and has long tables that can seat a larger group. I’d be happy to check it out next weekend. I called them and they said 6pm is a good time for Thursdays, with 7pm typically requiring a 30 min. wait. There are no reservations.

    Other suggestions welcome.

I haven’t been a manager for very long and learning from you has made a huge difference to me — not just because of your suggestions for how to manage but also because of the boost in confidence I get knowing that I’m doing the right things. My approach is, “If I do what Mike and Mark say, I can’t go too far wrong.” And three months into my new job managing 8 people, it’s working like a charm. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback. Last week one of my directs told me that she was really happy to have me as her manager. Another said, “I know you haven’t been a manager for long, but you just seem to fit the job like a glove.” Thanks guys!

I hope we can connect in SF.

    -Mark

    Mark (taffywit),

Thanks for the help! Tommaso’s looks like it’s pretty close to the Mark Hopkins (where Mark and I are staying), so that will work out well. Can you check with them about Tuesday the 6th, at 8pm?

If that works, let’s all plan on meeting at Tommaso’s North Beach restaurant at 8pm on Tuesday, the 6th. If anyone arrives early, please try to get us a table!

Those interested in attending, please just leave a comment here so we know how many to expect.

Mark and I are looking forward to seeing everyone there!

    best regards,
    Mike

  7. Oskar Says:

    Hei!
Big fan of your podcast from other side of the planet from small country called Estonia. Sadly arriving in S.F. only on Thursday 8th in the evening and will miss your event.
I would have loved to meet people I think about every time I think about management. : )

    Have great night!
    Oskar

  8. mauzenne Says:

    Oskar,

Now THAT would have been awesome … I could have told my associates that we had someone come in all the way from Estonia to meet us. Not exactly true, but would have made a great story. ;-)

    Sorry we’ll miss you!

    Mike

  11. Mark Says:

I called the restaurant. I’ll show up at around 7pm and put my name on the list. They’ll hold places for a large group to eat at 8pm. I’ll get a head count from this list.

    See you there!

Talk about bad timing. Wife is travelling on business and I have baby duty. I really wanted to get feedback on my handshake. Maybe next time. Regardless, will keep listening. Thanks for everything.

    Hello all,
I’m coming in from Vancouver for the Game Developers’ Conference. I’ll meet everyone at Tommaso’s on Tuesday. I’ll be the one over-thinking my handshake.

  23. taffywit Says:

    Okay, I count 14.

If Tommaso’s think there’s a chance they won’t be able to handle 14, I’ll find another nearby restaurant and wait at Tommaso’s.

    See you there.

    -Mark Evans

  24. Michael M Says:

Just saw this on the site.

I’d love to attend if you could handle one more.

Darn it. It looks like today might be a really busy day. I work in the South Bay, and might not be able to make it tonight. Sorry to bail on you at the last minute. I’ll try to make it if I can. Otherwise, have fun.

  26. DaveTehre Says:

    Hi,

I too really enjoyed your talk at GDC. I really do suck at this :) and have always been curious as where to find good managment information. Thanks for providing this resource.

    Hi Guys,

Fred from Blue Fang Games here, the Zoo Tycoon guys. Thansk for the GDC talk, it was great. I was thrilled that Mark called on me a couple of times, hope I was helpful. Sorry I didn’t hang around for the photo, looked like you had your hands full with folks. If there is ever anything I can do for you guys, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

    Best,
    Fred

    Fred-

I was thrilled to meet you. Drake thinks I’m a rock star now because of Zoo Tycoon. The fellas over at High Voltage have just sent him some games signed, and now I can do no wrong.

It meant a lot to me that you came and stood up for us. Thank you.

    Mark
