It really works
November 7th, 2006Several friends of mine privately suggested to me recently that email has become so pervasive and powerful to careers that my recommendation of having one’s admin look at it just wouldn’t work, and our recent cast was therefore flawed.
Here’s someone who agrees with us. This comment came in from Mike Ciolino, regarding having his admin help with email:
“I began having my admin read ALL my email about a month ago and believe it’s one of the smartest things I’ve ever done.”
It works for all the C-Level execs I know, and Mike Ciolino thinks it’s one of the smartest things he’s ever done.
If you haven’t done it, and you have an admin, why wouldn’t you?

Sir,
I very much enjoy the show topics which touch the core of my responsibility. Thanks for you all.
In Saudi Arabia we work with multi nationals staff, cultures and working habits.
Can you lead to better working and managing tools that adds value?

I agree with Mark, overriding my initial reaction that security would be compromised. (i’m an IT Administrator). Perhaps the flack you are getting, when you suggest that your Admin handle you’re email, stems from the likelyhood that inappropriate content exists in those emails! Simply the thought of knowing that your Admin could be (let alone WILL be) handling your email might cause you to “clean up your act” in regards to email. As you mentioned in the podcast the “send on behalf of” function in Outlook is great for this.

I have had my admin person reading my email for years. Most of the time she either answers it or can make a first draft of an answer that saves me considerable time. The reasons are too numerous but a few are, to make sure there is a appropriate follow-up, forward to a more appropriate person, do the research before a response is composed. Only the most sensitive or complicated emails are designated for me to draft a response. Even then, I have my admin review and suggest possible changes. Seeing such responses through ‘another’s’ eyes has saved me from some serious blunders.
