The Economist

in

I've been reading The Economist for the past few months, because of its reputation, out of respect for our international listeners.

I am quite impressed.  The level of detail, and the insight, particularly regarding business and governmental intersections, are compelling.  And, it is well written, which is always a joy.

No matter where you are, if your firm is doing business internationally - whether you are involved in that part of the business or NOT - I encourage you to pick it up or subscribe.

They also have a great podcast that I get through iTunes. It gives you something to listen to while you're waiting for the next installment of Manager Tools.

Opposite opinion. I used to subscribe

Opposite opinion. I used to subscribe the Economist and found their articles to be much deeper than any popular business publication in the US. However, over time, I developed a sense that they had become more political than economic or business oriented and I dropped the subscription. I recall paging through one of my last issues and not finding a single article that was useful to me.

As a foreigner living and working in

As a foreigner living and working in the US I not only keep in touch with issues and trends in my own country, I find it provides excellent analysis of domestic (US) issues.

In my opinion, The Economist also has

In my opinion, The Economist also has an excellent online presence. A print subscription earns one online access to what's in the print edition, plus podcasts and other items- great for reading on the road without dragging yet more paper around.. (The Wall Street Journal that also has an excellent online site, but access is a fee over the print subscription cost).

I subscribed to the Economist after

I subscribed to the Economist after reading the MT members-only podcast and I can honestly say it is the best intellectual investment I have ever done. Learning all about the "business world" is one thing, learning the "world" itself is another. Once again, thanks very much Mark & Mike. I am at the very beginning of my professional career and I know for sure years later I will be refering back to these podcasts that changed my perspective in life.

Yes, The Economist is clearly

Yes, The Economist is clearly obligatory for those who seek to remain well-informed, especially with regard to international affairs. As for the superb quality of the prose, I understand that they use only staff writers. No external submissions. I learned this when I was working as a speechwriter for a very, very senior U.S. Defense official. He decided that he wanted to publish an article in The Economist, and was turned down. Saved me esome work, I suppose....
