Transitions 2

July 2nd, 2006

Funny thing happened today. As I was thinking about my post about transitions, I saw the latest Fortune magazine in the mail, with an article about Bill Gates’s recent job “TRANSITION.”

[ So far, this thread includes the Wall Street Journal and Fortune, hospitals, nuke subs, Microsoft, Bill Gates, and READING. ;-) ]

Gates will be transitioning into a role of non-executive chairman over the next two years, essentially leaving behind day to day operations. He will be spending much more time with his foundation, which has essentially doubled in size with Warren Buffett’s donation of approximately $30 billion.)

And he said, of his transition: “The last time I made a big transition was when Steve [Ballmer] took over as CEO about 6 years ago, and it took us about a year to get the rhythm of how we worked together, and I think there will be some of that same learning curve as I step into this new role.”

Transitions are hard for arguably the smartest and richest guy in the world. If transitions have been easy for you, it may be because your standards were too low.

Mike and I look forward to your comments.
