1st Anniversary Cast

July 2nd, 2006

Welcome to the Manager Tools First Anniversary podcast!

Warning: This Show is Different! Don’t expect our usual management tools and guidance. Today, we’re simply “talking”.

In today’s show, we take some time to talk about what’s happened in our first year, and also make some announcements about features and products we will be rolling out in year two. It has been a wonderful year for us, and we have been working hard behind the scenes to bring you even more value going forward.

So, if you’re interested in the Manager Tools “state of the firm”, check out the show!

I discovered Manager tools a few weeks ago and finally managed to download all the podcasts. It wouldn’t be an exageration if I say that Manager tools changed tremedously my way of considering management and my everyday acts.
In the podcast about the “secrets of a great handshake”, the most universal way to greet people, Mark insisted on the “universality” of the handshake but was particularly inspired in giving perfect American examples. I was completely lost in Mark’s baseball explanations on grip intensity (I don’t play baseball, nor American football …). If America is so introverted, why are its companies and people so successful? It’s because of your systems: techniques, technologies, procedures and … manager tools.
    Happy birthday Manager Tools!

    Guys,

First off, congrats…..Mark and Mike, you are going to roll your eyes when I say this, but I think you have done, through your podcats, what we all aspire to : made the world a little bit better than it was before u came. seriously. think about it. there is a book by the Kathis that speaks about the devastation that bad managers cause. here it is : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0446576743/sr=8-1/qid=1151876912/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5191210-0443121?ie=UTF8

And in that context you have helped me and my team become much much better managers that we could have hoped for. I train people leaders in my company through LED sessions (Leadership and Executive Development) and i use your casts. Hope I am violation some copyright :) and the moment you have a good manager a t the helm s/he manages to make a very very positive impact in the quality of life of ALL her/his directs right off the bat and a job impacts so much more than itself. you are talking family,self-esteem,outlook,health…one could go on….

so, you are making one heck of a difference.

And your stuff is miles ahead of what most of the crappy org dev consultants peddle here. which is mostly some useless pig of a method with some glossy lipstick.

so, believe me, you guys have impact. 50+ people leaders in my 1000 employee company intimately know the brand ‘Mark and Mike’

You deserve good things happening to you and if you/your family ever come to India my company and I personally will love to host you in Delhi.

Congrats and keep up the good…scratch that…..excellent work guys !!!

    warm regards,
    Shiva

Congratulations on your ‘birthday podcast’. What a tremendous achievement. Many, many thanks for all the help you provide. Your counsel is immeasurable in how much it helps people - some of whom don’t hear your podcasts, as you touched upon in the show.
I got some idea of this when I told my team that I had accepted a new role. Their first concern was that the new person would not be so committed to communication as I had been - and I put that all down to the weekly one-on-ones we have. I was bowled over by the feedback.
Your are so right in saying the value of the podcasts is soo much more than could ever be obtained from a score of seminars and books. Thanks to you both.

  4. Guy Pilens Says:

    Congratulations on a Great Year.

Thanks for sharing your Vision for the Future, The Interview Tools, The Manager Tools Dashboard (A PDA Version Would be Cool - maybe another Idea for the Funnel). I just can’t wait for them to be rolled out.

You have enriched My Management life, helped me confirm things I’ve learnt in the past that hadn’t gell’d yet.

I’ll remeber where I was when Manager-Tools started, hopefully all that follow in years to come will see Manager-Tools as part of popular “The Management Culture”, something you just “Have to have” to be an effective Manager.

As usual, can’t wait for the next Podcast………
Congratulations again on a Fantastic year, Thanks for Sharing!!

Congratulations on the birthday podcast. What an amazing achievement. Many, many thanks to you both. As you mentioned in your show, the benefits accrue to people who don’t even listen to the show.
I can attest to that. When I announced to my team that I was taking on a new role, the concern they had was that their new team leader would not be as committed to communication - and that all stems from the weekly one-on-ones. Great feedback.
Again, thank you for all your great counsel and here’s to the year ahead.

  7. Mark Horstman Says:

    Filalio-

    Thanks for the kind note!

Sorry that baseball bats are not in ready supply in Morocco. I will figure something out that’s more universal, I promise.

And, whenever you hear us getting too American, please speak up. I have that as a commitment to listeners this year.

Thanks again - it’s a privilege to do this for you.

    Mark

  8. Mark Horstman Says:

    Omio-

Danke Schon. Pardon the lack of umlauts.

Please let us know how we can continue to serve you well.

    Mark

  9. Mark Horstman Says:

    Neil-

Many thanks for the kind words! We do it for you, so thank YOU for endeavoring to become a better manager.

And WOW what a great moment that must have been. If you’re like me, you probably thought of yourself as a good manager and good communicator. Then you started doing one on ones, and the team responded.

I hope for the team’s sake that your successor DOES do O3s…but if not, I know now you’ll never stop.

Thanks again, and here’s to year two!

    Mark

  10. Mark Horstman Says:

    Shiva-

What a GREAT note! Thanks for all the kudos.

When you say our stuff is better, we really appreciate it. We don’t think of ourselves as better, or in competition with anyone, but we know what the other stuff is like, and we just have no desire to produce that… because we know it won’t help people change.

And I have a feeling Mike and I will get to Delhi sometime in the next couple of years. When we do, we’ll stop by!

And… sadly… based on what you mentioned, you may BE violating our copyright. It’s rarely black and white, though… so why don’t you send me a private message with the details of what you’re doing, and we’ll figure out how to do this in a way that satisfies everyone. Fair?

I admit to looking forward to your posts… so much energy!!! I want more Shivas as members!!

    In appreciation,

    Mark

  11. Mark Horstman Says:

    Guy-

Love your website, by the way! Tried to sign the guestbook, but got an error. I love stuff done well that I couldn’t do… it’s one of the joys of a diverse life. Well done!

And… thank you so much for the kind words about the cast, and the look forward.

You and I are on the same wavelength about a PDA app for management. I have a feeling a lot of managers just need the kinds of reminders and tools that we think of in, say, MS Outlook, or Notes, or PowerPoint, or Excel… even just making the effort because one has been reminded is better than doing mail at one’s desk.

I am moving to a larger office shortly, and will have a HIUGE whiteboard. One of the spaces on it will be for your idea… the MT pda dashboard.

Thanks for being a member and helping us grow to serve more managers.

    It’s a privilege every day.

    Mark

  12. Mark Horstman Says:

    Hey Neil-

Sorry you had to post twice! That was our bad. Spam is a never ending battle.

    Cheers.

    Hi Mark & Mike!

First of all congratulations with your one year of Manager Tools podcasts!!

Manager Tools is given attention in Adam’s PodFinder Podcast (Episode 15)
It was published was published in January 2006. This is how I got to know about Manager Tools. Podfinder is available via iTunes.
I am listening every week to your podcast for about 6 months.

Listening to your aniversery podcast that I conclused that you are are not aware that Adam Curry already promoted your Manager Tools. (I concluded this because you mentioned that did not send him a demo. Which whould be good for the promotion of your show.)

Your Podcasts truly contributes to my effectiveness as a Manager. There are few podcasters who publish weekly with such quality content. I guess you already know IT Conversations. It is also really informative especially if you are in active in the IT field.

Moreover I enjoyed your advise on books. I just finished the Effective Executive from Peter Drucker.A great book!

    Keep up the good work!

    Edwin Brouwers

  14. Mark Horstman Says:

    Edwin-

Thanks for the great note and kind words.

I am not sure that Mike knew about the mention on Podfinder (though he always does seem to know things like that.) So, thanks for pointing it out. We would like to do more marketing, but keep seeing our numbers go up… so we hope “remarkability” is what’s getting us there.

Glad you like our ideas, and books. TEE is the cornerstone of management writing.

    Mark
