Our Apologies
I would like to apologize for not having your podcast ready on Monday (today). We never really intended to have a particular day that casts were available, but we've received so much feedback about everyone enjoying our casts to mitigate your (Monday) commutes, we've grown to like this "time slot", if you will.
This failure is completely mine, and as it turns out, I'm very comfortable with it (even while fully accepting that I failed).
This past weekend, I had to take my 10-year old son Drake to the Emergency Room following a week of "not feeling so great." I expected a diagnosis of strep throat, and so was quite surprised late Friday night when the doctor said an immediate CT scan was required and emergency surgery in San Antonio - 80 miles away - was a significant possibility.
As it turned out, the CT scan suggested the emergency tonsillectomy was not required, and we escaped the ER at 3:30 am Saturday. Drake recuperated all weekend.
The tasks I owed Mike went uncompleted.
Drake is FINE, and appreciates in absentia your forbearance of his father's failure.
Nevertheless, our apologies, and commitment to resume weekly periodicity.
Mark

Thanks Todd. Drake's fine now. It was a great reminder about what's important... and it isn't the one or two days - you're dead right there.
Appreciatively,

Mark, Hope all is well with Drake.
Mark,
Hope all is well with Drake. I'm sure he's back to being himself. I would have to agree with the others and say; You never have to apologize for family. Besides, what's one or two days?
Continued Thoughts..

Mike -
No need to be sorry. Once we all start paying for this service (gift) then we can start complaining!! Though I doubt that anyone would...
More often than not, when a podcaster is late posting a new show, I mostly worry about what might have happened in his/her life to get in the way - and hope that it is something relatively minor!!
Best regards,
Rob

Derek-
Happy Birthday to your daughter, and congratulations to your entire family for enduring the ordeal.
My daughter Kate, now a senior at Tulane, is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed when she was five. That experience is a defining one in my life, and hers too! We are deeply thankful for the outcome, and mindful of what it taught us.
And, Mike and I are humbled by the kind comments. Horstman's First Law: It's All About People. And when good people get together... WOW.

I can empathise with your experience.
Last year my daughter was born with congenital heart disease, which turned our lives upside down literally overnight. When this sort of thing happens you naturally re-evaluate your focus and priorities.
I had been employing the GTD methodolgy both at work and at home. It was a great insurance tool for me during the time we spent in hospital. It allowed me to focus on my daughter's situation fully, whilst knowing that all the projects and next action commitments I had were documented and available to my colleagues, who could move things on in my absense as required. This meant I was able to detach myself effectively and quickly.
I continue to use the GTD methodolgy because it keeps my head clear of stuff and allows me to focus on now.
My daughter will be 1 in on May 24.
Thanks for putting together some great podcasts.

how you must have been frightened to learn about everything your son could have been through.
I 'm very happy that none of it came true, but still let him rest and get well (son and the family)
about the late show, I will not accept the apologies : you are taking your free time to give some people (doesn't matter if is one or more) a free show. What they receive is worth a lot and i and all other listeners are getting without any cost (i 'm not and many listeners are not giving you anything in return (not even a thank you )
before i go on, i want to thank you for your show it is great and i really appreciate it. you have listeners who care, some will give you feed back, some care and will not give you feed back, and some who don't care. for the last one, they are not worthy to get your podcast.
there was a priority with the life of your child, the show is perhaps another priority but it must be after the first one. A good manager will choose in which order its priority must be ranked and do them (or delegate them) in the order he chooses.
isn't ?
get well and thank you again for the show

Mark and Mike,
Thank you for some of the best buisness ideas ever to be published, but of course, family comes first.
All the best,

Allie- Thanks for your kind words.
Allie-
Thanks for your kind words. Your post is WELL taken. We do have a cast on the work family balance issue in the queue. By the way - there IS no balance to be had - one must choose what one's priorities are, and then live one's life - not just do one's work - in accordance with those. When we start putting our "first" priority on hold because "family will understand", we're really behaving as if it's NOT a priority. Our priorities are what we do!
Thanks for your kindness towards Drake. He IS better, and he appreciates your care and concern.
It's a privilege to serve you,

Mark,
I agree w/ May - perhaps a future cast could address situations such as these. Too few individuals in business today choose the easier left vs. the harder right, and end up regretting it for years. (Take PatGren for example.)
I'm glad to hear Drake is better! Continued prayers are being sent your way.
Thanks for raising the bar!

You didn't fail us.
Had you chosen to provide us with a free pod-cast over providing care for your child, then you would have failed us.

I missed my Monday Podcast too, like many others to be sure! But reading this, I whole heartedly support "family first". This is from one who missed several significant things that my now 21 year old will not let me forget, I cannot go back and make these things right. So when I see others get it right the first time, I am on the sidelines cheering you on.
Try very hard never ever to be in a position where you regret not being there for family first.

I think Chuck said it for most of
I think Chuck said it for most of us.
May be one of the future casts can be about how to deal with such things, both as the person having to deal with such priorities, and as a manager supporting and coaching employees through some recurring difficult situations of this nature?
Anyway, hope Drake is getting back to feeling "great" again soon.
Chuck- Thanks. I'm sure Mike and I
Chuck-
Thanks. I'm sure Mike and I have talked about it before, but this fell into the "Cadet Prayer" category: "Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never be content with a half truth when the whole can be won."
And you're right - he did.

Mark:
You had your priorities correct. No need to apologize for doing the right thing. I'm glad to hear Drake is doing better and I'm sure he appreciated your time and attention at the Emergency Room.
