The Minto Pyramid Principle: Logic in Writing, Thinking and Problem Solving

Why We Like This Book:

The best book on business writing ever. Barbara Minto has given us a step by step process for producing clear, brilliant, simple writing that will persuade as well as inform. It is not cheap, nor easy - but neither is running a $100 million business. If you think you can do the latter, try the former first. Because we’ve read your writing, and it’s not very good. (Mike and Barbara are friends - she’s sharp and wonderful.)

Note: As Amazon doesn’t have the latest version of her book, the best way to get Barbara’s book is to order it direct from her (the links above will take you to her site for ordering information). Let her know you heard about her from Manager Tools! :-)

I got this book from a friend 5 years ago and studied it like no other subject I had ever studied. I worked it into a class on analytical thinking that I gave to my company and it was an incredible hit. The company bought six copies shortly thereafter and, to this day, I still have had folks discuss it with me.

It is extremely effective but it is definitely not something to put into practice after just a few examples. It takes some time to ingrain the techniques into your own writing style. I still have to review periodically to keep things in line.

I highly recommend this book to anyone willing to take time to learn very power communications techniques.

“The Pryamid Principle by Barbara Minto”

This is an excellent book and I well recommend your listeners purchase a copy. For those who feel the book is expensive look again

    Amazon.com reports this as a 256 page book $110

Checkout UK editions. It has been reprinted by Prentice Hall ISBN 0273659030
rrp £34 (or from Amazon.co.uk at £23 see link for details

Great book, but will take a lot of discipline and focus to put into effective practice. You have to unlearn a lot.

You can buy this book from Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pyramid-Principle-Present-Thinking-Clearly/dp/0273659030/sr=8-1/qid=1159286664/ref=sr_1_1/026-6262565-9811644?ie=UTF8&s=books

It’s 23 pounds, plus shipping, total 30 pounds, or 44.60 Euros, or about $US 57. Not cheap, but much cheaper than the $100 plus P&H she is asking for on her website.

People such as D S McCormick and Ian D Stanley above confuse the “Pyramid Principle: Logic in Thinking and Writing” written by Barbara Minto in 1985. Its publishers subsequently launched several new editions, which have only minor revisions and several typos. By far and away the better book is the heavily rewritten/revised “Minto Pyramid Principle: Logic in Thinking, Writing and Problem Solving” written by her in 1996 and self published. This much better book is available from www.barbaraminto.com for US$125 + P&P.

Yes, please go to Barbara’s site … until she mentioned it to me during dinner one night, we made the same mistake of linking to the old edition.
