First, Break All the Rules
February 23rd, 2006First, Break All the Rules by Marcus Buckingham, Curt Coffman
Why We Like This Book:
We love data, and Gallup had a pile of it in developing the key insight here: great managers find people with the right skills for a job, and then focus on enhancing and rewarding what’s already there. They DON’T try to teach everything to everybody. Unlike In Search of Excellence, they didn’t fake this data. Gives detailed guidance, so we REALLY like it.

Wow, what a great book. This must be compulsory reading for any manager. Just finished reading it once and I’m about to turn around and read it again. I can’t wait to start putting some of the ideas into action with my people as this will definitely help me plot some impending tricky decisions about their development paths. Lots of practical advice backed by the research not just theory. Go read it!

This is a great book to introduce the concept of strategic discrimination. All companies have a variety of employees with wide ranging talents that must be handled individually to be most successful. I appreciated how Buckingham and Coffman rely on solid data to get this points across. I enjoyed this book so much a few years ago that I condensed it into a series of slides to pass on to some of our managers, but mostly for my own interest. If you like the book Breaking All The Rules” I would highly recommend “Good to Great” by Jim Collins as a good follow up read.

The book is fantastic because it truly goes over what a positive and effective leader is with facts from directs, managers, customers and companies.
Amazing book to get people motivated or re-motivated to management!
